Artist Statement
Sofia Westergren is primarily a costume designer but also acts as a performer and filmmaker. Within costume, she works with both traditional techniques, such as corsetry, and more obscure practices, such as thermoplastics and digital work, interested in mixing period styles with modern aesthetics and vice versa.
She possesses a particular fascination with anything related to Fantasy or Horror. Interested in World-building, peculiar characters, and complex types of relationships. Her practice is heavily research-based, looking into myth and history. Through this, she explores concepts of escapism, fantasy, and identity. Reflecting on her own relationship to having the identity of queer Finnish-Korean woman and an obsession with Fantasy and Horror.
In her practice, she has worked on short films, live theatre, and custom commissions. Considering the sustainable aspect is key to her practice, trying to use second-hand materials and be mindful of those that are not.
